FIFA 17 Headscans

FIFA 17 HEADSCANS

MATCH caught up with EA Sports’ Digital Imaging Lead Nigel Nunn recently – the guy with the best job in the world! He visits footy clubs to scan players’ faces for FIFA! We spoke to him about how it all works...

THE PROCESS

NIGEL SAYS: “It takes about three hours to set all the cameras up. In total we do five different pictures, just to get the different angles of their head, and different expressions to get all the detail in their face!”

LIGHTS, CAMERA...

NIGEL SAYS: “The first head scan is completely neutral, with no lines on the face.”

DON'T SAY CHEESE

NIGEL SAYS: “We don’t do a happy or sad face, we just get different parts of the face moving so we can use different pieces of the face and put them together to create a range of emotions.”

THE GAFFERS

NIGEL SAYS: “All the Premier League managers are in the new game, so we’ve scanned them all. Most of them are like, ‘why am I doing this? This is what the players do!’”

VAIN UNITED

NIGEL SAYS: “We had to stay an extra day or so at Man. United, and when Ashley Young found out he went out and got a haircut and a shave, then came back in to get his photo done again!”

HAIR SWAPS

NIGEL SAYS: “We create our players bald and then we animate the hair, so we can easily swap hair in and out. We can probably change Messi’s hair, but we can’t do it with everybody!”

ALWAYS ON THE ROAD

NIGEL SAYS:  “I’ve been to every club in the Prem for the last three years. We go to other clubs, too – last year we went to Bayern and Juventus, and the year before we went to Real Madrid!”

THE PLAYERS

NIGEL SAYS: “The players really enjoy it. It’s amazing how many of them play it and are addicted to FIFA. One manager yelled at us coz his players kept staying up too late the night before a big match!”
