MATCH chats to WEST BROM’s lethal leftie about all things penalties!
HOW MUCH DO YOU PRACTISE PENS?
CHRIS SAYS: “We don’t really practise penalties that much, unless we have a cup game. We do get video clips from the coaches during the week if there’s a chance of a penalty shoot-out that weekend, though. If not, you’ll just make your mind up on where to strike the ball at the time!”
WHERE DO YOU STRIKE THE BALL?
CHRIS SAYS: “It depends. If I’m going straight down the middle of the goal, I’ll usually smash it as hard as I can with my laces. If I’m going towards one side of the goal, I’ll use more of the inside of my foot for accuracy.”
POWER OR PLACEMENT?
CHRIS SAYS: “I tend to hit it hard! You’re only 12 yards out, so if the keeper goes the right way and you’ve hit it hard, you’ve still got a chance of scoring!”
DO YOU EVER CHANGE YOUR MIND?
CHRIS SAYS: “If you think too much about it during your run-up, you’ll make a mistake. So no, nine times out of ten I’ll pick my spot and stick with it. As long as you make the keeper make a decent save, you’ve done part of your job.”
WHAT’S YOUR NO.1 PENALTY TIP?
CHRIS SAYS: “You’re probably asking the wrong person this question – I hit my last penalty onto the motorway! I usually just put my head down and put my foot through it! Just hit it as hard as you can into the corner! Obviously, people expect you to score penalties, but it’s not always the case!”
