The SOUTHAMPTON midfielder tells MATCH all about his first footy experiences! Check it out…
MY FIRST... FOOTY KIT!
JAMES SAYS: “I used to love the Arsenal strip with the O2 sponsor. That was the shirt that they wore during their invincible season and I can picture Patrick Vieira wearing it and dominating, so that was my favourite kit when I was younger.”
MY FIRST... HEROES!
JAMES SAYS: “My heroes were more from the bigger teams – so people like David Beckham, Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard. I’d try to copy Gerrard’s FA Cup final goal or Lampard’s late-arrival-into-the-box finishes!”
MY FIRST... POSITION!
JAMES SAYS: “I had a spell at centre-back for a while, which probably seems hard to believe, but my first position was midfield. It’s positive to be able to play a number of different positions, because it increases your knowledge of the game and helps you understand where you should be!”
MY FIRST... BOOTS!
JAMES SAYS: “I don’t remember my first pair but definitely my favourites as a kid were the champagne Predators that David Beckham wore. adidas did a remodel of them and I went straight out to buy a pair and relived my memories as a child!”
MY FIRST... TRAINING DAY!
JAMES SAYS: “I came in one morning and my coach told me I was training with the first team. As I was doing up my shoelaces, one of the senior players came over and screamed at me, so that woke me up! I was only 16 and was training with people like Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Ricky Lambert and Adam Lallana, so it was really nerve-racking!”
MY FIRST... PRO MATCH!
JAMES SAYS: “It was Crystal Palace away in the League Cup. I found out I was playing the day before, and I couldn’t sleep because I was so worried! Looking back, it’s all a bit of a blur so I don’t remember much about the game – I did hit a few stray passes, but the manager said well done for trying things!”
MY FIRST... GOAL!
JAMES SAYS: “My first goal was against Coventry in the FA Cup. I got into the box, Adam Lallana crossed in the ball and I managed to get a good contact on it. I pointed to the back of my shirt and stuck my tongue out – which was blue because I‘d had a Powerade at half-time!”
MY FIRST... ENGLAND GAME!
JAMES SAYS: “It was Lukas Podolski’s last international, and I came on just before he came off, so a lot of the time was spent with him getting applause from the crowd! But to play against the then world champions was incredible, and it was a good incentive to push on to win more England caps!”
